About Animalcoffee
Animalcoffee is an Indonesian company that is owned
by Troy Davis.
It is managed (very capably) in Bali by Mr Muchtar Tjakra;
if you intend calling or visting our Bali office you
will speak with Muchtar.
At the risk of sounding self indulgent,
here is a bit about how Animalcoffee began.
- In the early 90's I moved to Indonesia to work
for Bali Hai Cruises, who do day cruises around
some small islands near Bali.
- I have always had an interest in strange plants,
and I started doing trips to Sumatra to photograph
them.
- Most of the more interesting plants, such as the
famous big stinky flower Amorphophallus titanum
(see below), are found at altitude, which meant
climbing mountains.
- In the late 90's, while hiking through a coffee
plantation in Sumatra, I noticed some strange things
on the ground which turned out to be kopi luwak.
- I did some research and found that it was in demand
in the US so I asked the porters I used in Sumatra
to start collecting it for me.
- I began selling kopi luwak in small bags to tourists
in Bali, and soon after I put it on-line.
- While on a trip in central Java I found a cool
little box shop and they started making the boxes
for me.
That's Animalcoffee in a nutshell; along the way I
have seen some fairly interesting things...
Troy with the world's largest flower Rafflesia
arnoldii, in West Sumatra.
Contrary to popular belief - not that smelly.

My daughter with the flower(s)
of Amorphophallus titanum, the world's
stinkiest flower. Known in Indonesian as bunga
bankai, the corpse flower, because of the smell.
It is actually a group of flowers
which is why Rafflesia beats it. |
